ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Nikki Fitzgerald graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science in 2007 and has her masters from Lamar University.  Nikki recently joined Texas Sea Grant as the Chambers and Jefferson County Texas AgriLife Marine and Coastal Resources Agent. Fitzgerald worked for years as a biology and environmental science teacher where she was awarded Teacher of the Year from Region IV and Soil Conservation Science Teacher of the Year for her region.

For many years, she brought students to participate in the Galveston Bay Foundation Hip to Habitat Program where they would harvest cordgrass, grow them in mini estuaries, and transplant the cordgrass in the bay as a shoreline restoration project. She educates youth in the importance of oyster reef restoration and the benefits that oysters bring to our bay system. Fitzgerald brings volunteers to the Adopt-A -Beach clean ups, marsh grass restoration projects at the local Wildlife Refuge, and has written grants to start a recycling program in her area.

Other areas of focus will be educating youth though the Jefferson County Camp Seaport, participating in the JASON project at Lamar University, and educating landowners about improving their skills in pond management to enhance recreational fishing and eco-tourism opportunities.
