Training and Extension

Supporting Coastal Livelihoods and the Working Waterfront
Texas Sea Grant helps sustain the livelihoods that depend on our coast. We provide direct support to commercial and recreational fisheries, aquaculture operations, coastal tourism, and marine-related small businesses. Through workforce development, technical training, and business assistance, we empower coastal communities to grow sustainably, remain resilient, and adapt to changing environmental and economic conditions.
Key areas of focus include:
- Boater Safety and Maritime Training: Workshops and resources that promote safe boating practices and enhance navigation skills for recreational and commercial users.
- Safety Training: Guidance and education for coastal workers—such as commercial fishers, aquaculture operators, and marine technicians—on best practices and risk reduction.
- Extension Support: One-on-one technical assistance and group trainings led by Sea Grant Extension agents for local professionals and stakeholders.
- Job-Specific Workshops: Tailored sessions that address coastal planning, environmental compliance, sustainable fishing practices, and more.
By supporting both emerging professionals and experienced workers, Texas Sea Grant strengthens the coastal workforce and helps communities thrive in a changing world.

FEATURED PROJECT: CAMP SEAPORT
Texas Sea Grant supports Camp Seaport, a hands-on educational experience designed to introduce high school students to careers in the maritime and coastal industries. Through activities like boat handling, safety training, and exposure to marine technology, students gain valuable skills and insights into real-world coastal careers. By connecting youth with industry professionals and career pathways, Camp Seaport plays an important role in Texas Sea Grant’s workforce development efforts, helping to inspire and prepare the next generation of coastal and marine professionals.
Building the Future Coastal Workforce
Texas Sea Grant supports workforce development by preparing students and young professionals for careers that contribute to the sustainable management of Texas’s coastal and marine resources. These efforts help ensure a strong pipeline of skilled individuals ready to address the region’s environmental and economic needs.
Key initiatives include:
Partnerships with Academic and Industry Leaders: Collaborative efforts to align education and training with real-world job demands.
Fellowships and Internships: Competitive opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on experience in marine science, policy, communications, and coastal management.
STEM Education Support: Classroom materials, teacher training, and outreach to promote interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, with a focus on marine and environmental careers.
Career Readiness Training: Workshops and mentoring that help students develop technical and professional skills relevant to the coastal workforce.
Coastal Texans face unique challenges—from rising seas and intensifying storms to water quality concerns and development pressures. Texas Sea Grant partners with local governments, emergency managers, and residents to build more resilient communities. Our initiatives in hazard mitigation, climate adaptation, and environmental planning help reduce risks and support long-term recovery.
