Oyster Gardening
The Mid-Coast Texas Master Naturalist Oyster Gardening Pilot Project is a community-driven conservation initiative aimed at restoring oyster habitats along the Texas coast. Volunteers, including trained Master Naturalists and public participants, grow juvenile oysters (spat) in specially designed cages suspended from docks and piers. These oysters are cultivated for conservation purposes—not consumption—and will later be relocated to protected restoration sites. The project promotes marine stewardship, enhances coastal resilience, and provides hands-on educational and outreach opportunities in partnership with organizations such as Texas Sea Grant, the Matagorda Bay Foundation, and Texas Parks & Wildlife.
