YMCA Summer Camps
The YMCA Environmental Summer Camp program for Calhoun and Matagorda Counties is an impactful youth development program designed to immerse students in outdoor, place-based learning experiences that promote environmental literacy and foster an early interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), natural resources, and conservation.

Overview
The YMCA Environmental Summer Camp program primarily serves underserved and rural youth who, despite living near some of Texas’ most dynamic and ecologically significant coastal ecosystems, often have limited access to coastal education and environmental science programs. This camp bridges that gap by offering up to 11 weeks of immersive, hands-on learning experiences rooted in environmental literacy and coastal stewardship.
Each week, campers engage in field trips, guest speaker sessions, and STEM-based activities designed to spark curiosity and deepen their understanding of marine and coastal ecosystems. The program emphasizes place-based learning, encouraging students to explore and appreciate the natural environments right in their own communities. Activities include water quality testing, marine and aquatic wildlife exploration, coastal conservation projects, and interactive science experiments—all delivered in a fun, engaging, and supportive atmosphere.
Texas’ coastal economy and ecology depend on having an informed and engaged next generation. By focusing on experiential, locally relevant education, the YMCA Environmental Summer Camp cultivates early interest in science and natural resources while promoting inclusivity and access for youth who might not otherwise have these opportunities. It not only supports academic growth and personal development, but also plants the seeds for future careers in environmental and coastal sciences.
