Sea Turtle 101


To engage the public in sea turtle conservation, TXSG created the iSeaTurtle mobile application in 2020. Available for both Apple and Android devices, the app allows community members to report sea turtle sightings directly to TXSG. Originally developed for an ecosystem assessment of Matagorda Bay, the app has since expanded to track sightings along the entire Texas coast. The data collected has improved understanding of sea turtle distribution in Texas waters and can be used to inform future sea turtle outreach and research efforts. Key partners and sponsors included the Texas Comptroller’s Office and Turtle Island Restoration Network.

Overview

Sea Turtle 101 introduces students and community members to the fascinating world of sea turtles through hands-on science and conservation activities. The program blends biology, engineering and real-world problem solving. Participants learn about sea turtle species, nesting behavior and migration, explore conservation challenges like plastic pollution, and see tools such as turtle excluder devices (TEDs) and bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) up close. A STEM activity challenges learners to design prosthetic flippers, sparking creativity and critical thinking. Each participant also receives Barney and the TED, a Texas Sea Grant coloring book that reinforces key concepts in a fun, age-appropriate way.

Educators and community partners can contact Texas Sea Grant to bring Sea Turtle 101 to their classroom, library or event and request a free sea turtle poster—a colorful reminder of the amazing ocean neighbors we share the Gulf with.
