Dolphin Challenge
The Dolphin Challenge is a Texas regional competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) held in Galveston. It brings together high school teams to compete in a fast-paced quiz bowl format, testing their knowledge of ocean science topics such as biology, chemistry, physics, geology, marine, and ocean sciences. The event promotes ocean literacy and encourages students to pursue careers in marine and environmental sciences. Winners of the Dolphin Challenge advance to the national NOSB competition.

Overview
The Dolphin Challenge is a Texas regional competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) serving high school teams from Texas and surrounding states. Hosted annually by Texas Sea Grant at Texas A&M University with Aggie Sea Camp, the Dolphin Challenge is part of a nationwide academic competition and educational program that addresses a national gap in environmental and Earth sciences in public education. It introduces students to ocean science, engages them in real-world environmental topics, and prepares them for careers in ocean science and other STEM fields.
During the event, student teams compete in a rigorous, quiz bowl-style format that tests their knowledge in a wide range of ocean-related disciplines, including marine biology, physical oceanography, chemistry, geology, and marine policy. Teams must answer both rapid-fire toss-up questions and more complex, collaborative bonus questions, encouraging not only individual excellence but also teamwork and critical thinking.
Beyond the competition, the Dolphin Challenge fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the ocean’s role in global systems. It often includes interactions with scientists, opportunities to tour research facilities, and exposure to real-world environmental issues facing the Gulf Coast and beyond.
Winners of the Dolphin Challenge earn the opportunity to represent their region at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl finals, where they compete against top teams from across the country. The event supports NOSB’s mission of preparing students for leadership roles in science, education, and environmental advocacy, particularly in ocean and coastal fields.
