Steven Washington joined Texas Sea Grant in January 2018. As a planning specialist with the Community Resilience Collaborative and Texas Target Communities, his primary responsibility is to provide technical assistance to coastal communities in land use planning and hazard mitigation. He earned his master’s degree in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy from Texas Southern University in 2015. Before joining Texas Sea Grant, Washington served as a Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland Scholar, where his duties included assisting faculty members with descriptive and exploratory research and record-keeping for grant compliance.
As an Environmental Defense Fund Fellow, Washington worked to estimate the energy savings and emissions reductions from the adoption of an alternative supply chain strategy at Port Freeport in Freeport, Texas. He received his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Texas Southern University in 2009. His research interests are land use planning, environmental justice, port sustainability, community engagement and capacity building.
